3 Signs You Secretly Hate Your Job and Will Quit - The Muse
3 Signs You Secretly Hate Your Job and Will Quit - The Muse 3 Signs You Secretly Hate Your Job and Will Quit There can be a fine line between feeling content (or even happy) at your job and feeling desperate to get out. A good workflow can change with new organizational priorities, a disagreement with your boss, or your own external circumstances (like if you need more money or flexibility). And these events that make your great job suddenly suck can seem to appear out of nowhere- but did they really? Here are some signs to watch for so you can avoid being blindsided by hating your work. Sign #1: Sunday Night Blues Are the Norm Though the âSunday Sadsâ are not a new concept, many professionals have reluctantly accepted them, coping through Instagram memes and comforting Sunday rituals. But, if this feeling of dread or anxiety before work arises on a regular basis, pay attention. While itâs comforting to know youâre not alone (a Monster.com poll shows that more than three-quarters of US workers surveyed feel sad and anxious on Sunday evenings), that doesnât mean you should just accept these feelings as the norm. If you experience signs of physical and mental exhaustion just at the thought of going back to work, working with a specific person, or meeting a work goal, you could be one project away from wanting to quit. Try This Create two columns and map out in as much detail as you can what fires you up at your job versus what drags you down. Take a look at positive side and ask, âDo these attributes actually point toward a new direction?â Likewise, look at the items that drag you down and consider âCan I change or reframe these? And if not, to what degree am I willing to keep experiencing this?â It may become clear that you can address certain aspects where you are or that you should begin seeking new opportunities. Sign #2: Your Work-Life Balance Is Non-Existent Raise your hand if youâre making a decent salary, but you canât even enjoy it. Are you in a cycle of paying rent for an apartment youâre never at and buying food that youâre scarfing down in front of your computer? Maybe you enjoy diving deeply into your work. (For example, if a particularly visible project was handed to you, youâll want to spend extra time working on it and exceeding expectations.) But eventually, the adrenaline runs out and the lack of self-care or personal time can turn into disdain for your job. Try This The key here is to identify if you have control over building a better balance between work and other things you value. If so, what can you change to shift this cycle? Alternatively, if this pressure to work all the time is coming from the company, be honest about whether this level of commitment really works for you- or has you headed for burnout? If itâs the latter, itâs time to consider building boundaries at work, or seeking a company that aligns with your optimal balance. YOU DESERVE A JOB THAT ACTUALLY RESPECTS WORK-LIFE BALANCE And we know just the companies to apply to. RIGHT THIS WAY Sign #3: Youâre Not Being Mentored for a Leadership Role It can take some time to tell how strong your opportunities for growth are, and if thereâs an upward path for you. A team that may be really supportive and offer lots of guidance during training may also not encourage you to speak up or actively involve you in advancement opportunities as you gain experience. Maybe your manager asks you to complete aspects of her job, but doesnât give you credit during meetings, or declines your request for of a high-ranking project (without any feedback as to why). Or, perhaps other colleagues tend to resign at a certain point in the company, usually to pursue a promotion or further education. Sometimes, you really arenât ready for advancement. But, as you gain experience within an organization, you will quickly hit a ceiling- in your career and how you feel about your work- if growth and leadership arenât cultivated in entry-level and mid-manager positions. Try This Schedule a time to meet with your immediate manager to discuss your plan going forward and brainstorm ideas to develop your skill sets, leadership opportunities, and visibility in the company. If this goes well, put these ideas into action, and note how people in the company respond. However, if this conversation isnât fruitful and nothing changes, start getting your resume in order, because odds are thereâs an expiration date on how long youâll be satisfied in this role. By staying on the lookout for signs that you may be weeks away from hating your job- you give yourself more opportunities to process and prepare, which can lead to a more efficient job search. If you identify with the signs above, donât ignore them. Photo of woman on phone courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images

How You Quit Your Job Really Matters for Your Future
How You Quit Your Job Really Matters for Your Future How You Quit Your Job Really Matters for Your Future Unless youre 16-years-old and in your first job, youve had the experience, at some point during your career, of quitting your job. And youll undoubtedly quit the job youre in now (unless you get fired or laid off). While there are billions of people in billions of different jobs, new research shows that there are only seven ways to quit a job. Researchers Anthony Klots and Mark Bolina surveyed people who quit their full-time job and classified them into different styles. These are: 31 percent resigned by the book. This means that they told their bosses face to face, provided a letter of resignation, and followed standard quitting protocols, including providing advanced notice. These people also provided a reason why they were leaving.29 percent went through the same motions as above but didnt share what prompted them to leave their organization.9 percent worked hard to smooth their own transition out.8 percent let bosses know in advance that they were looking to leave their organization. 9 percent werent open about their job search with their bosses. Sometimes they quit through HR or sent an email or text over the weekend.4 percent quit on impulse. This usually happened after something upsetting or awful happened at work. 10 percent were bridge burners. These people didnt care about what people thought about them after they left. Bridge burners provided, unsurprisingly, short notice periods. What does all of this mean? Well, it depends on whether you are the manager or the person who is quitting. Both groups can learn from this analysis. Managers Can Learn Most of the impulse quitters and bridge burners reported abusive bosses. If your employees frequently quit without notice or act as if they dont care about what you think of them, it could mean that you, the boss, are the problem. While terrible employees will always exist, if this happens on a regular basis in your organization, its time to rethink your own behavior. Ask yourself the following questions: Do I yell? Raising your voice may seem like an effective way to get information across, but it makes your employees uncomfortable. Do I treat people fairly? Is your best friend one of your direct reports? Then you are probably treating her differently than the other employees. How did I treat the last person who quit? Did you make life a living hell for an employee who gave a two weeks notice? Did you cut her hours, or give her the worst shifts? What about references? Did you tell future companies how awful she was, to get revenge for her leaving you in the lurch? Your other employees notice how you treat other people when they quit. Do I give consistent advice and guidance? When you assign a task, do you come back later and tell the person to do it in a different way? Do you abandon employees and refuse to answer questions until the project fails? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, start there. Youre treating your employees poorly, and they are not only more likely to quit, but they are also more likely to leave you in the lurch when they do. Your business runs more smoothly when you get advanced notice of a terminating employee, so reward people for letting you know. And treat everyone fairly all of the time. Your continuing success depends upon this. Employees Can Learn If youre the employee who wants to quit, the best behavior for your professional future is to give your boss advanced notice and work hard until the end of your employment. Unless your health (mental or physical) is in jeopardy, impulsively quitting or burning bridges is not a good idea. You may think that you can burn bridges all that you want because you do not want any contact with your former boss ever again. But you dont always get to choose this. When you apply for a new job, the recruiter can contact your former boss with or without your permission. Most companies want to speak to at least the HR department about every job that youve had in the recent past. If you quit without notice or did something else to burn bridges, the HR person or your manager isnt likely to say, âYeah, she quit without notice but that was because I was screaming at her.â Nope, theyll just say, âQuit without notice. Ineligible for rehire.â And, theyll leave it at that. Of course, how much notice you give your manager, and how much you tell him about why you are leaving depends on your manager and the company culture. If your manager is a jerk, saying, âIm quitting because youre a jerk,â wont help you at all. If your manager is a great manager, but bound by company policies, saying, âIm leaving because Im a high performer, and the company wont allow you to give me a decent raise,â is a great thing to do because it gives your manager leverage to help your former coworkers once you are gone. You have to make this decision based on your experience of your manager and your organization. Remember, even if you have a jerk for a manager, you give the two weeks notice to help your future and to ease the transition for your coworkers. Whichever way you choose to leave your job, remember that how you walk out the door today can affect your job hunt five years down the road. Make your choice carefully. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

8 things to help get your financial life in order in 2019
8 things to help get your financial life in order in 2019 8 things to help get your financial life in order in 2019 A few weeks ago, in the Money Circle group, someone mentioned that they want to get their financial shit together in 2019. They asked what steps they should be taking in order to do that with their money. This is going to look different for everyone, depending on your situation, but there are certain steps that are always good to take.Decide What You Want to AchieveWhat is the number one financial goal you want to reach in 2019? This might seem obvious, but you have to actually decide which money goals you want to reach in order to reach them. For the new year, sit down and decide what you want to achieve in 2019. That way, you can start taking the right steps to get there.Do you want to create a budget that youâll actually stick to? Do you want to get a higher paying job? Do you want to pay off your debt? Whatever your goal is, get clear on it so you can get started. Remember to be realistic when setting goals, so you donât end up frustrated and demoralized when you donât re ach them.Get Clear on Your NumbersThis is essential if you ever want to be financially healthy. You have to know how much money youâre actually working with. Sit down with a notebook or whip up an Excel spreadsheet, however you prefer to do it. Write out exactly how much money you earn each month, and then list out all of your bills. Whatever is leftover should be used for your flex spending, savings, and additional debt payments. To learn more about how to get clear on your numbers to create your budget, check out my past posts.Schedule Weekly Check-InsSetting a budget is great, but itâs not very useful if you only look at it once a month or less. Thatâs why you need to check in with your budget at least weekly. I call it a Money Minute, you can call it whatever you want. The most important thing is that you do it. Schedule at least one time each week to check in with your money. It can literally be 10 minutes where you see how much youâve spent that week and compare it to whatâs available to you for the month. It doesnât have to be terribly complicated or painful. In fact, the more you do it, the less painful and more helpful it will actually be.Choose One Monthly Expense to EliminateWe all know thereâs at least one thing we donât really need to pay for anymore. It could be a small subscription that you donât take full advantage of anymore, or it could be a bigger payment, like the gym membership you never actually use. Once you get clear on your numbers, youâll be able to identify one unnecessary recurring expense that you can get rid of. It might not account for a lot of money, but every little bit counts, especially over the course of a year.Open a High-Yield Savings AccountIâm a huge fan of high-yield savings accounts (check me out on NerdWallet!). These accounts provide an interest rate that actually means something. Unlike traditional brick and mortar banks, high-yield savings accounts have interest rates of about 2% right no w! Thatâs over 100% more than a regular bank can offer. If you want your liquid savings to grow in a meaningful way, you should open a high-yield savings account. This is especially important when it comes to your emergency savings account, because it will be a bigger amount of money that you (hopefully) donât have to touch for a while. Let your money work for you!I personally use Ally Bank for this type of account, but there are lots out there now, like: Synchrony, American Express, and Barclays. They all typically have similar interest rates and fees (or lack thereof), but look into each of them and decide which one will be best for you.Automate Your SavingsOnce youâve chosen the bank for your high-yield savings account and opened the account, itâs time to set up automated savings! Automation is key when it comes to almost any financial decision. Thatâs because it takes your emotions out of the equation and makes sure it gets done without you even having to think about it. This is especially true when it comes to saving. Because really, who actually saves the money that they have leftover at the end of the month? Figure out how much you can realistically afford to save each month, and set up direct deposit through work. It can be a tiny amount, or it can be bigger. The point is: automating will make sure that you actually do save, and youâll be proud of yourself in a few months when you see how much itâs grown.Make a Plan to Eliminate Consumer DebtConsumer debt is basically any debt accrued by spending money on things that donât gain value. This would not include a mortgage or student loans. Consumer debt is considered âbadâ debt because of its high interest rates and low value of return. Conversely, something like student debt typically has low interest rates and the return is that you will (hopefully) succeed in your career as a result. Consumer debt can easily get out of control and the interest rates can make it grow fast er than you can keep up with it. If you have debt like this, meaning credit cards or personal loans, you should prioritize paying it off. Of course, this kind of debt payoff can take a long time, so the important thing is to put a plan in place for getting it paid off.Figure out exactly how much you owe. Gather all of the information and put it in a spreadsheet where you can see it in one place. Make sure you include the interest rates of each card. From there, decide if you want to take the snowball or avalanche method to paying down debt. You should also look into your consolidation options. Then figure out if you can afford to make larger or additional payments on your debt each month or throughout the year. Using a debt calculator can help you get a good idea of how much you need to pay to get your debt paid off by a certain date. Good luck!Increase (Or Begin) Your Retirement ContributionSaving for retirement is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. We can no longer rely on things like pensions to get us through our old-age. Itâs up to us, as individuals, to support ourselves. So if you havenât already started saving for retirement, make that a priority in 2019. If your employer offers a retirement plan, enroll in it, and invest at least the percentage that your employer will match. If your employer doesnât offer a retirement plan, or if you are self-employed, open an IRA. You can contribute up to $6,000 to an IRA each calendar year.If you have been saving for retirement, itâs time to revisit your contribution. If you havenât increased the percentage that youâre putting in, you should do that, especially if youâve received a cost of living increase or raise. Even an increase of 1% will make a difference in the long run. A good rule of thumb is to increase your retirement contribution 1% each year, especially as your salary starts going up.- - - If you do even one or two of the items on this list, youâll be better off in 2019 than you were in 2018. Itâs okay if you canât do everything, because youâre a human and you have a limited amount of time and money. Be kind to yourself while youâre putting new systems in place, but keep moving forward! This article first appeared on MaggieGermano.com.

3 Signs Its Time for an ERP Upgrade
3 Signs Itâs Time for an ERP Upgrade 3 Signs Itâs Time for an ERP Upgrade Your enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, whether itâs used for accounting, human resources, supply chain management or other business processes, is intended to help increase workforce productivity and boost your organizationâs bottom line. However, like any technology, it can become outdated and inefficient, preventing your business from achieving all of the above. How do you know when itâs time for an upgrade? Here are three signs your ERP system might need a makeover. Sign #1: Your team is suffering from low productivity While an outdated ERP system likely will not be the sole reason for diminishing productivity and lack of efficiency in your department or organization, it could be a major root cause. For example, are your employees spending a lot of time developing workarounds since the system doesnât meet their needs? Another question to consider: Was your on-premise ERP system implemented when your employees worked primarily on-site? (Some legacy ERP systems go way back.) If so, you might need to bring technology up to speed to accommodate a modern anytime, anywhere workforce. (See Sign #2.) Sign #2: You arenât in the cloud More companies are embracing cloud-based solutions for ERP. In fact, fewer companies than last year are using an on-premise ERP system as their primary financial system, according to the 2015 Benchmarking the Accounting Finance Function report from Robert Half and Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF). Some business leaders are still hesitant to move key processes to the cloud, especially financial systems. But cloud-based ERP solutions offer numerous advantages, including real-time system upgrades and, in some cases, lower maintenance costs. Keeping your ERP tied to a local server also puts your business at risk of data loss due to errors, malfunctions or even natural disasters. Moving your ERP to the cloud can add a layer of security for your data. Plus, your team members will be able to access the information they need anytime, from anywhere. (See Sign #1.) If youâre still uncomfortable with cloud-based financial systems, consider a hybrid ERP approach. With this option, your organization can keep extremely sensitive data on-premise while moving other components to the cloud where they can be accessed securely by authorized users. According to Gartner, almost half of large enterprises will have deployed some type of hybrid cloud by 2017. Sign #3: Your ERP system is too complicated Bottom line: An ERP system should streamline business processes and make accessing and managing data easier for your staff. However, if your employees are working with an outdated legacy system, itâs likely they find the technology time-consuming and burdensome to use. Before you upgrade, take time to speak with employees who will be working with the solution regularly. Find out what they loathe - and just as important, like - about the current system. Their input will be invaluable when selecting new or enhanced capabilities for your ERP system. Be sure to set aside time for formal staff training on the upgraded system, as well. Even if the updated system is vastly more user-friendly than the current version, your team will still need time to adapt to change. Find out if your ERP provider offers training, and if not, research other options. Keep an eye toward the future Major ERP upgrades can be resource-intensive - and disruptive - which means theyâre not something you want to have to do often. Itâs therefore important to choose an ERP system that has the ability to adapt and evolve with your business. Look for an ERP system that integrates business intelligence, workflow, communication and collaboration across all of your companyâs core functions. The solution should also work harmoniously with your existing office applications, email, mobile devices and other business systems. And donât forget the past when upgrading: You want the ERP system to have your legacy data available for future data mining for business intelligence, as well as potential compliance requirements. Once youâve decided itâs time to upgrade your ERP system, consider working with expert consultants who can help guide the implementation process. They can also identify opportunities to optimize the system and ensure that it has the capacity to grow along with your business. How did you know it was time for an ERP upgrade? Freelance Jobs You Can Work From Home
Freelance Jobs You Can Work From Home Freelance Jobs You Can Work From Home When most people think of freelancers, they think of creative jobs: writing, editing, perhaps advertising and marketing gigs. While those areas are full of opportunities for entrepreneurial types who want to work at home, either on a full-time or part-time basis, theyre far from the only occupations that lend themselves to the freelance life. Heres a roundup of several freelance jobs some youd never expect. Writing Lets start with the obvious: freelance writing is the classic work-from-home job. If youre not already toiling away in virtual ink, however, you might not realize how many different types of freelance writing jobs there are. From journalism to copywriting, blogging to social media, there are writing jobs for every temperament and type of experience. Editing and Proofreading Whether youre a seasoned grammarian or just someone with a solid eye for detail, the internet teems with editing and proofreading gigs for your level of skill and experience. Marketing and PR If you have a phone and an internet connection reliable enough to sustain a Skype meeting, you can do your marketing or PR job from the comfort of your own home. Just be prepared to take the occasional on-site meeting. In many cases, the client will want to look at their marketing or PR pro in the eye once in a while and not just over a webcam. Social media coordinator and manager jobs also fall under this umbrella, and as easy to do from home as from an office. Transcription Transcription jobs generally come in three flavors: medical, legal, and market research. The latter requires the least amount of study, in terms of familiarizing yourself with the specialized technical language of the field. In most instances, transcription jobs are meted out by an agency, which will require you to take a typing test and then set you up with jobs as needed. Data Entry If you can type 60 words a minute or more, and find repetitive work more Zen than dull, data entry jobs might work for you. Just beware: ads for data entry jobs that promise big bucks or ask for bank account or other personal info before allowing you to get started are red flags for scams. (More on work-from-home job scams at the end of this article.) Virtual Assistant Work If you have experience as a personal assistant, administrative assistant, or office manager, you can do a similar job for a variety of clients, from the comfort of your own home. Virtual assistants provide administrative support over the phone and internet, often working through an agency that connects them with clients. Call Center Virtual call center jobs are the same gig as the in-person job, minus the trip to the call center. One caveat: make sure you know if the company will provide paid training, or if youre supposed to pony up for your own start-up costs. The latter scenario could cost you a pretty penny, or turn out to be a scam. Online Tutoring Coach elementary, middle school, high school, or college students on a variety of subjects, via the internet. Most companies will want teaching experience in the subject youre tutoring, plus a college degree. Your Full-Time Work, as a Freelance Job Dont assume that your current occupation is incompatible with freelance life. Many jobs that seem firmly rooted in the brick-and-mortar world of physical offices and facilities are actually perfect for freelancing. For instance, Registered Nurses can find a variety of freelance gigs that require their licensure, skills, and experience, including case management for insurance companies, telephone triage, and medical call center work. Also, check out these work-from-home computer jobs for more options to consider. Beware of Scams Hidden among the many legitimate work-from-home job listings are scams of varying degrees of cleverness and malicious intent. To avoid getting caught by a work-at-home job scam, always research companies before you commit. Dont send money, account or social security numbers, or any information that would make it easier to steal your identity. Beware of organizations that require you to buy a kit before you can get started, or promise to help you get rich in a hurry. Bottom line, remember the adage: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

5 Problems with The Ladders 6 Second Resume Study
5 Problems with The Ladders 6 Second Resume Study 5 Problems with The Ladders 6 Second Resume Study 5 Problems with The Ladders' 6 Second Resume Study I know youâve heard this one before hiring managers only take an average of six seconds to glance over your resume before deciding to keep or trash it. If youâre in the resume business, you see this statistic from The Laddersâ famous resume study cited everywhere. Youâve probably even cited it a few times yourself. I know I have. Then it struck me. Has anyone even taken a close look at the studyâs methodology to see if it has scientific merit? I decided to examine their methodology in detail to see if the study could be improved, and if their conclusions were correct. The result? There are major problems with The Laddersâ famous study that may have led to hazy or incorrect results. Allow me to preface this post by saying that itâs admirable that The Ladders went through the effort to do bring a scientific lens to the hiring process, and attempt to bring some objectivity to the table. I think that is to be applauded and appreciated. However, it is also important not to accept the results of any study at face value. Conclusions should be peer-reviewed and tested to determine accuracy, and constructive criticism should be given to improve any studies performed in the future. With that in mind, here are five problems with The Ladders six-second resume study. 1. The study provides too few important methodological details This is a major issue throughout the study. Statistics should never be taken at face value, and itâs impossible to praise or criticize the methodology of a study that does not make its methods transparent and open. Hereâs the biggest missing detail from this study: Were the recruiters told in advance whether they were viewing professionally re-written or original resumes? If they were told in advance, it would bias the results in favor of the professional re-written samples. This would be like judging brownies, and being told in advance which ones were baked by Martha Stewart, and which ones were baked by a twelve-year old. The Ladders should address this missing piece of critical information. 2. The study uses scales and statistics incorrectly, generating questionable results The Laddersâ study used something called a Likert scale to help recruiters gauge the âusabilityâ and âorganizationâ of any given resume. Before I continue, hereâs what a Likert scale looks like: Iâm sure youâve filled one in several times in your life. Using the Likert scale was a good choice for this study. Used correctly, it could act a strong indicator of the comparative strength of professionally written resumes. Unfortunately, The Laddersâ study only gets it half right. What the study got right Recruiters were asked to rate the âusabilityâ and âorganizationâ of resumes on numerical rating scale from 1-7 (instead of Agree-Disagree as shown in the Likert scale above). 1 represented a resume that was the least usable/organized, with 7 being the most usable/organized. Because the scale is numerical, The Ladders calls it a âLikert-likeâ scale, not just a Likert scale. Hereâs where the study gets a bit sloppy. What the study got wrong The Ladders claims that professionally re-written resumes were given an average rating of 6.2 for âusabilityâ versus 3.9 before the rewrite. They then calculate this as a 60% increase in usability. You canât do that with a Likert scale, (or a Likert-like scale). Consider it this way â" make a list of three movies, assigned values 1-3. Your favorite movie (1) A movie that you like (2) A movie that you sort of like (3) Whatâs the percentage difference between the movie that you sort of like, and the movie that you like? How about between the movie you like, and your favorite movie? Are the intervals between them even? I know for me, they arenât. Itâs difficult to even choose between my favorite movies most of the time. If it doesnât work with movies, how could it work with the resumes in this study? Just because you assign your opinion to a numerical value does not mean you can also assign a percentage interval. Again, let me be clear â" the results stemming from the Likert-like scale probably reveal that professionally written resumes were better organized and more usable than the originals, but that cannot be calculated into percentages. (At least with this kind of statistical test.) 3. The study uses unclear language and words that are not defined Letâs take a look at the studyâs claims piece by piece: âProfessionally prepared resumes also scored better in terms of organization and visual hierarchy, as measured by eye-tracking technology. The âgaze traceâ of recruiters was erratic when they reviewed a poorly organized resume, and recruiters experienced high levels of cognitive load (total mental activity), which increased the level of effort to make a decision.â First of all, itâs unclear what the study means by âcognitive loadâ/ âtotal mental activityâ. Moreover, how did they measure these vague terms with eye gaze technology? Again, the lack of transparent methodology and clear definitions renders these terms impossible to make any comments about, and determine if the study is truly accurate. Secondly, how does one measure whether a âgaze traceâ is erratic? The fact is that though there may be ways to measure this kind of thing statistically, its hard to know if their conclusion has any merit when they just summarize the math in their own words without showing us any of the computations. Thirdly, the Likert scale is misused once again in this section to create the illusion of a hard statistic: â[Professional resumes] achieved a mean score of 5.6 on a seven-point Likert-like scale, compared with a 4.0 rating for resumes before the re-write â" a 40% increase.â Weâve already gone over why that is not a legitimate way to represent Likert scale data. 4. Industry HR Experts Dont Agree We interviewed seasoned human resources experts about resume screening, about how long they spend on a resume on average, and what they think of the 6-second rule. Here are a few of the responses: Matt Lanier, Recruiter, Eliassen Group I always go back and forth on the whole 6 seconds theory. I cant really put an average time for how long I look at each one; for me, it really depends on how a resume is constructed. When I open up a nice, neat resume (clear headers, line separations, clearly in chronological order, etc.) I am more likely to go through each section of the resume. Even if the experience is not that great, having a resume that looks professional and reads well will cause me to spend more time examining it. Kim Kaupe, Co-Founder, ZinePak Once I narrow down candidates from the cover letter filter I will spend 10-15 minutes reviewing individual resumes. Glen Loveland, HR Manager, CCTV The 6 second rule? It varies company to company. Heres what Ill say. Recruiters will spend less time reading a résumé for an entry or junior level role. Positions that are more senior will be reviewed quite carefully by HR before they pass them on to the hiring manager. Heather Neisen, HR Manager, Technology Advice Initially, an average resume takes 2-3 minutes for me to scan. Sarah Benz, Lead Recruiter, Messina Group the average time spent on the initial resume review is 15 seconds. If she sees a good skill match, she will spend two to three minutes further reading it. Josh Goldstein, Co-Founder, Underdog.io We spend, on average, 2:36 per application. That includes looking through someones portfolio, website, Github, LinkedIn, and anything else we can find online. Michelle Burke, Marketing Supervisor, WyckWyre Our hiring managers honestly spend time looking through resumes. They value every application that comes in and want to hire as many people as needed rather than screen through applications and end up with no one. 5. The study makes conjectures without data to back it up The study needs to be more careful about making conjecture and speculation, or give better reasoning to support its claims. For example, the study says: âIn some cases, irrelevant data such as candidatesâ age, gender or race may have biased reviewersâ judgments.â While the above is not necessarily an incorrect hypothesis, itâs pointless to include in this study unless The Ladders can prove it with actual data. If they are speculating, they need to be clear about that, or else be clear about the bits of data that substantiate their claims. Due to the opaqueness of the study, itâs impossible to know how they made that determination. Here are two other areas where critical information is missing: We donât know why The Ladders chose a sample of 30 people Hereâs why this is important: In general, ordinal data (IE. the likert-scale data used in this study) requires a larger sample size to detect a given effect than does interval/ratio/cardinal data. So, is 30 people enough for this study? If The Ladders did not set a clear rule for how large a sample they were going to recruit, they could theoretically continue to choose as many or as few people as necessary to come up with a result that that they wanted. Again, Iâm not accusing The Ladders of doing this, but just giving another example for why study methodology should be transparent and open â" results carry less meaning unless they can be examined. Another problem: We donât know if the differences were statistically different from zero This is a bit more difficult to understand, but essentially this means we canât tell if their results were just from sheer randomness or a real underlying difference. To determine whether the results were sheer randomness or actually reveal differences, the study needs to report z scores or t scores, Pearsons rs or Kendalls taus, etc. These values are the statisticians tools for making an inference about whether observed differences reflect some real, underlying difference, or whether theyre likely to have resulted from just random noise. The study reveals no such information. 6. Study doesnât answer The Big Question: Does any of this even matter? Hereâs The Big Question â" do these professionally rewritten resumes actually help people find jobs, or land more interviews? While itâs interesting to find out if professionally written resume get better ratings for usability and âmore orderly eye gazeâ, the important question is whether people are getting interviews and jobs because of these resume qualities. The most meaningful statistic would be to figure out how large an improvement in orderliness of gaze and resume ratings is required to move a resume from âno interview/not hiredâ to âinterview/hiredâ. (Granted, this question would be a complex problem to figure out, and impacted by a large number of variables.) But without knowing if there was a meaningful difference in hiring/interview trends, itâs hard to know if the increases reported by the study are large, small, unimportant, or important. Again, I think itâs great that The Ladders went through the effort to come up with a resume and recruiting study. However, we should be careful to remember that bulletproof studies can be hard to design, and statistics can be unintentionally misleading, and frequently tricky to interpret. Hopefully, this analysis can serve a jumping-off point for a new and improved study that may reveal some surprising information about how recruiters tend to behave, and how to help people find jobs more efficiently. We reached out to The Ladders for a comment on this article and a request for their in depth methodology for further review, and have not yet received a response.

A Job Seekers Guide to Assessing Fit in a Company Culture
A Job Seekers Guide to Assessing Fit in a Company Culture A Job Seekers Guide to Assessing Fit in a Company Culture Since the primordial days of the human race, the concepts of fitting in and being part of a culture have been key to our survival. Itâs no surprise, then, that this survival instinct has carried over to the professional world. As organizations have matured, employees have come to be seen more as assets than expenditures. With this, the understanding of the role culture plays within a companyâs walls has evolved. Today, more than ever, the concept of cultural fit has leapt from the confines of a human resources initiative and is now on the mind of those in the C-suite. Why has the significance of culture increased so much in recent years? Well, thereâs a lot of science running behind the bandwagon that has become corporate culture. Studies have shown a direct link between unified corporate cultures and the output of their employees⦠and those at the helm of successful organizations have embraced this research. Not only do successful organizations actively manage, shape and, when necessary, re-position their cultural identities- they also actively seek out talent that shares similar fundamentals. So if companies are keen to the notion of their own cultures and seek to attract high potential talent that clicks within their walls, are there any indicators that individuals seeking employment can use to determine whether or not they will align with an organizationâs culture? The answer is yes, most certainly, but all too often job seekers omit this part of their searches. As you identify organizations of interest, here are some methods you can use to determine whether you will flourish in an environment where your beliefs and values are shared by the masses, or if youâll wither under the reality that you simply do not fit in. Grab a Shovel Nowadays, most organizations attempt to be transparent about their culture- youâre likely to find references right in their mission statement. These can be great, but if you simply rely on these polished, marketed excerpts, youâll never discover the full story. This is where the shovel comes in handy⦠youâll need to do some digging. Of course, you should use your network, but forget asking, âTell me about your cultureâ- that rarely elicits the information youâre after. Consider instead asking about how decisions are made, typical work-life balance, and even things as simple as dress codes. These are all factors that go into the equations of culture. Donât stop there! Look to current clients, partners and even past employees. Their experiences working from a different vantage point may identify additional pieces of the puzzle that make up a companyâs culture. Look Up! Culture isnât created overnight, rather it permeates an organization slowly. Similar to the way that great rivers and canyons are created, the foundations for most corporate cultures can be gleaned by looking to those at the top. Does the CEO blog? If so, their writings may give you some insight into their beliefs and values. Oftentimes a simple interview published in the local paper will shine light onto how various leaders align themselves culturally. Sure, a CEO or president may not always mirror their companyâs culture to a T, but the chance is strong that the company itself will be trying to align itself toward its leadership. Take the Test If youâve been doing your homework and think you have a clear vision of a corporationâs culture, and you find yourself unsure as to whether or not your personality will mesh, consider taking one of the many cultural assessments available. Many employers rely on predictive tests to help determine if youâre a good match, so why not examine your own results in relation to what you know about the organization? A simple internet search will offer multiple opportunities to take personality and cultural assessments. Remember to take these results with a grain of salt- a discrepancy between your results and a corporationâs culture may not be reason to run. Youâll need to look at the big picture and determine if the tests indeed reflect your beliefs and values. As you seek out your dream job, remember to keep your ideal culture top of mind. Regardless of the lures of money and endless perks, long-term success and happiness is something you wonât have if you donât fit into your companyâs culture. At the end of the day, we all want to do work that makes us happy and has a purpose. As the late Johnny Carson once said, âNever continue in a job you donât enjoy. If youâre happy in what youâre doing, youâll like yourself. Youâll have inner peace.â Michelle Kruse has helped countless job-seekers find success as the editor and content manager at ResumeEdge.
